Sources & Methodology
Every number on this site comes from a source listed here. The list is generated from our data files, so it is always complete.
How we work
- Every number has a source, a confidence tier, and a last-verified date. Tap the info button next to any figure to see them. The site won't build if a published number is missing any of the three.
- We show ranges. Costs appear as low, mid, and high. When a source gives only a low and a high, the mid is the halfway point, and we say so.
- Totals are calculated, never typed. Startup totals, five-year comparisons, and forecasts are added up in code from the line items, and that code is tested.
- Missing means missing. If we don't have a sourced figure, we say “Data coming soon” and leave it out of totals. We don't estimate to fill gaps.
- Franchise costs come from the franchisor's own disclosure. Initial investment figures are from each brand's Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), Item 7, which already includes the franchise fee.
- Forecasts start conservative. Every assumption is shown and can be changed. A forecast is an estimate to plan with, not a prediction.
- Figures are rechecked at least once a year. Our publishing checks warn us about anything not verified in six months and refuse to publish anything older than a year.
- “Pending verification” marks a figure we haven't yet rechecked against its source. Pending figures are labeled, and the live site won't publish them.
